Beautiful Vintage Spring and Summer Wedding Dresses
Monday, April 15, 2013 9:26:21 PM America/Los_Angeles
Last week, I covered my ten new favorite handmade wedding dress designs for 2013. Last year I shared my picks for ten amazing handmade wedding dresses that are great for the summer months. I also rounded up my top picks for vintage dresses last year, and now that they’ve all long ago sold, I’d like to follow up with this year’s vintage finds! As wedding season approaches, we’re noticing that the trend of uber DIY weddings hasn’t faded. Crafty, handmade loving brides-to-be are clamoring for unique wedding invites, floral alternatives and vintage and down-home touches like mismatched dinner plates and ceremony chairs. As I’ve noted before, if you’re super into a specific dress from a shop like David’s Bridal or even a designer option, consider checking out used online shops like Pre-Owned Wedding Dresses or Once Wed to see if you can “recycle” a dress.
Below are my ten favorite picks for online vintage finds. Consider scouring your local Goodwill for scores of your own.

Beautiful vintage white and yellow 1950s floor length gown. Metal zip on the side. It has a small bit of rust right at the top, but it still looks nice. You might want to sew on a hook-eye if needed. Yellow floral lace shoulders, cross in the front. Long full skirt. Double layer of tulle, and a solid skirt underneath.

Strapless wedding dress with gorgeous lace and tulle bodice and long tulle layered skirt. Back metal zipper with boning in bodice. The classic 50′s wedding dress!

This dress has been specially modified by Birdy James – he eliminated the sleeves of this wedding dress, originally from the late 60s early 70s, to give it that extra modern touch. It is completely on trend now, and not only does it feel beyond special while slipping it on, but it photographs very well – every bride’s dream. Completely original and unique.

Absolutely stunning 1960s tea length wedding gown in a shade of creamy off-white with darker cream colored lace overlay
over a shimmery acrylic fabric. Boat scoop neck with short sleeves, sleeves have overlaid lace, lace overlay band around waist with bow ribbon overtop.

Beautiful wedding princess style dress covered in lace with just a few sequins at the bodice. Panniers at the sides and three lace rosettes at the base of the spine. Layers and layers of tulle. Shown with nothing underneath. Wear with a crinoline for more fullness.

Vintage 1960s-early 70s sheer white wedding gown with floral border and detail and long train. This dress is sheer and would need a slip worn underneath. A gorgeous unique wedding look!

Sheer ivory stretch, lace nude wedding dress from the 40s. Fitted sillhouette and romantic yet slightly edgy feel. Also, if you brought the hem up it could make a rad reception dress!

Vintage 1950s tulle and floral embroidered wedding dress with ruffled lace strapless boned bodice, fitted waist, full tulle layered frothy skirt, matching lace bolero jacket and metal side zipper.

Vintage 1960s wedding gown with a sweetheart bodice with lace appliques, paneled form fitting waist, full ballgown skirt with a small sweep train. The skirt has trailing lace appliques.

Adorable 1960s lace and cotton wedding dress that’s perfect for a garden or forest wedding!

This Dream Wedding Took 25 Years to Surface
Wednesday, April 10, 2013 2:31:09 AM America/Los_Angeles
It has taken Sam Senyonga and Juliet Nalumansi 25 years of studying each other, and last Saturday the couple was finally sure. The couple that has seven children walked down the aisle at St Paul's cathedral Namirembe under the watchful eyes of Rev Erisa Mayanja of St Andrew's church Kasubi, where they reside. Their children did a lot towards the success of their wedding, with extra credit to their eldest son, Sam Semanda.
"We sat back and our son did everything, thus making our ceremony less hectic for both of us," said Nalumansi.
Why 25 years:
They did not have enough money to facilitate their wedding, yet most of the weddings they usually saw on TV were expensive, which made them take their time to come up with a perfect dream wedding.
Dating:
The couple did not take long apart, because they had liked each other. Senyonga was very shy to say 'I love you' yet Nalumansi being a woman could not say it either. It took Senyonga one year to throw the shyness away and propose to Nalumansi.
Senyonga was never brave enough to approach Nalumansi. He always made casual visits to her parents but failed to express his interest in their daughter, preferring to use her brother.
"I remember the day I told her and how I sweated. I thought she would reject me but the shyness is the reason we have been together this long and we are still counting," said Senyonga.
"Patience is the only weapon that has made us win everything in life, because when you rush, you will crash; thank God we didn't crash," said Nalumansi.
Gifts:
"My husband is my special gift from God. He is so caring and guides me whenever I go wrong. For the 25 years, we have never separated, we have never exchanged bitter words and we don't think it will happen in future," said Nalumansi.
For Senyonga, the patience and understanding in Nalumansi are the special gifts she has given him. "I cannot evaluate these two gifts in monetary terms because they are very special," he emphasises.
Any more children?
They both think seven is a fair number and they expect no more babies. They are now working hard for them to have happier lives.
Challenging moments:
As a member of St Andrew's church Kasubi choir, most members were married and they constantly demanded for Nalumansi to get married as well so that she can be recognised in church as a married woman. Whenever she raised any issue, she was never given an audience; she was instead told to get married.
"Get married, tell your husband to put a ring on your finger, then we shall recognise you." And now the couple has a reserved seat in church since they are now properly married.

COW GIRL CHIC
Thursday, February 21, 2013 6:21:37 PM America/Los_Angeles
Last week we ran Something In Lace, an editorial featuring a couple dresses by Recapture that would rock for any country western wedding. Now that we're moving into better weather, I have more to share about western weddings and dresses. First off, let me clear one thing up: You don't have to live in Montana to have a real country western wingding. Find any ranch, farm or open meadow where guests can kick up their heels country style and you've got the right venue. While almost any dress properly accessorized can look western chic, your best bets are going to be Prairie Revival and Laura Ashley-style looks--check out those retro 70s high collars and dresses donning lots of lace. Cow Girl brides with maids in boots and short dresses sure are a hot ticket right now. Go ahead and add in some rustic elements like the ones here: horses, a barn, berries and a few straw hats. Mixing these you're gonna have the basics to build up a real yeee ha! celebration. Below you'll find a few inspirations for the ranch/cowboy/western wedding theme I particularly love....

FORWARD LOOK: NEW TRENDS NOT NECESSARILY BRIDAL
Tuesday, February 19, 2013 6:36:18 PM America/Los_Angeles

You don't always have to look at the bridal collections to see where bridal wear is going--these days anything that says, best dress can be considered weddingish. I made a point to go out there looking for gowns not necessarily bridal (but definitely designer) that could easily be worn by a bride on her wedding day. I found more often than not, truly stunning details along with magnificent fabrics and laces are what make brides go for.a certain dress. In other words you can echo mainstream fashion even if it means going with a bold color, texture or daring cut . . . .

PAOLA AND STEFANO'S VINEYARD WEDDING IN ITALY
Monday, February 18, 2013 6:29:22 PM America/Los_Angeles

This wedding was so beautifully and thoughtfully captured by photographers Luke and Caludia of Rossini Photography in Italy. Stefano, is a wine seller in Rome and Paola an architect. When planning their wedding they had always dreamed of celebrating it in a vineyard. And, the Italian countryside offers so many options! They ended up at Orvieto, in Umbria-- the perfect solution where they had the opportunity to get married in the magnificent cathedral in the ancient and medieval town. Add to that they scored the perfect venue for the reception, Decugnano dei Barbi, a well known vineyard producing excellent white and red wines. Decugnano dei Barbi is a proper “agriturismo”, a farm reserving part of its space and activities to work as a hotel. The Agriturismi are becoming very popular because they are the most authentic way to experience the countryside: you live on a farm, you enjoy the place, you eat meals prepared with ingredients grown within the same farm. And when the place is in such a beautiful and uncontaminated area as the countryside surrounding Orvieto, then the experience is superb.
The bride looked stunning in her tailored made dress by Angelo, a family friend. The event design and tableu de marriage where carefully thought out by the wedding planner Laura Serventi with theme colors being lilac, green and white. The floral design was taken care by a local flower shop, L’Erbavoglio, who decorated the tables with natural herbs and spices.
The guests enjoyed a meal done expressively by the farm's restaurant, Decugnano dei Barbi. From cheese and ham tastings, to spaghetti all’amatriciana, all were served and accompanied by local red and white wines produced in the farm’s vineyard. And perfect ending to a perfect day….the groom was thrown in the swimming pool!

EVEN MORE ON THE DOWNTON ABBEY PHENOMENON
Wednesday, February 6, 2013 6:00:51 PM America/Los_Angeles

From now on you'll find me randomly posting something or rather about this Masterpiece Classic. Every Sunday after Downton Abbey airs on PBS my Pinterest Board of the same name goes absolutely, stark-raving bonkers! On it, pinners finding anything worn by Lady Mary repin at breakneck speed and I'm left to wonder how phenomenons like this happen. I mean really, we can't seem to get enough fashion and social history out of this episodic soap. Week before last, Lady Sybil died of child birth. Next day on one of the DA pages there were several videos on eclampsia the condition that took her. Are we living vicariously through these lords and ladies? Wanting or missing some kind of grand magnificence in our lives?
Maybe one of the reasons we love DA so much is that: It's epic. And it seems every country has had one great epic in literature. Russia had War and Peace, America, Gone With the Wind and South America--House of Spirits. So why did it take good, old and established England almost 1000 plus years to grind out a really magnificent drama like Downton Abbey to add to this epic stew? Something very, very English, unabashedly playing out the dramas--warts and all-- of it's class system. Of war and change. Well, that is a question. I know it is a loaded one but I really want to hear more about from you fellow DA Addicts out
there . . . .

THE COLOR PURPLE AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

URBAN INSPIRED . . .
Monday, February 4, 2013 5:44:09 PM America/Los_Angeles

I'm always on the lookout for novel and cutting edge trends in the bridal arena. When I found this styled shoot in my box I knew the moment I laid eyes on it, this was something incredible! Shot at the Crewest Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, this project was inspired by the abundance of colorful graffiti and street art in Venice and other areas throughout Los Angeles. Said photographer David Zentz of Best Coast Photo "Although derived from street art, we wanted to create a look that at once was edgy and urban, yet modern and sophisticated. . . A top notch team was assembled to bring together all of the elements, which included a custom-made graffiti cake by the amazing Santa Monica's Vanilla Bake Shop." I'm adoring Tashina Hunter's one-of-a-kind bridal design and styling and how in simpatico our bride and groom are with each other. The flowers and bouquets here are refreshing and way off the traditional bridal path. I just have to pass out some well deserved kudos to this talented team of wedding pros for throwing a bit of modern inspiration our way . . . .

Also, yards of scrumptious fabric!

EFI AND GIANNI'S VENICE WEDDING
Friday, February 1, 2013 6:29:20 PM America/Los_Angeles

Elopements can be so romantic! Especially if Venice, Italy is the point of destination. For Efi and Gianni, a Greek couple living in Germany, this magnificent city of canals was the perfect place for just the two of them to tie the knot. Shot with a great deal of sensitivity by Venician photographer Luca Faz, the couple left the hotel in Canariggio and after a short 'vaporetto' ride (water bus) they took their vows quietly and intimately at the Greek Consulate. 'A Big, Fat, Greek Wedding' will follow a year from now in their home country. I absolutely adore Efi's civil ceremony-style dress--it's perfect and the lace peplum is a really chic touch.

DE LA RENTA'S BLUES
Wednesday, January 30, 2013 6:01:08 PM America/Los_Angeles
Here and there amid all the white lace and tulle did anyone notice the oceanic blues Oscar de la Renta incorporated into his Spring 2013 collection? I really love the subtle additions of a satin organza train, the tulle shawl and ruffled over skirt. Even the accessories from earrings to head wreath and bouquets don this complimentary, gentle blue tone. It's the little details like these that are ever changing bridal fashion and I'm just like a kid in a candy store watching it all happen . . .

THE JAZZ AGE BRIDE
Tuesday, January 29, 2013 6:16:30 PM America/Los_Angeles

Don't you just love looking at Gatsby era inspirations like these? This styled shoot took place at the Church Street Ballroom in Orlando, Florida. Photographer Misty Miotto shot this journey back in time with the help of some savvy wedding professionals lending a collaborative imagination on all the small details. Especially evocative of this carefree era are indeed the details. Check out the ferns on pedestals, the stained glass and bouquets--especially the whimsical mix of Hydrangeas and Ostrich plumes! So fun and a great tribute to the jazz age . . . .

LET ME CALL YOU SWEETHEART
Sunday, January 27, 2013 7:22:08 PM America/Los_Angeles

If you've caught a look at necklines lately you'll agree, the 'Sweetheart' is still ever on trend. Because we still love anything happening 1950s when it comes to bridal couture, this plunging heart shape defining the decolletage will probably hang around designer collections a few more years. A 'Sweetheart' can have a very pronounced heart shape(below) or gently curve (above). Great choice for any bride wanting to frame a pretty face or some cleavage.
SAMPLE SALE ON ETSY
Thursday, January 24, 2013 7:49:19 PM America/Los_Angeles

Well, it's that time of year again. While my design studio is packed with a few really great samples from seasons past and I love looking at these gems, bottom line is, we gotta part company and make room for the newbies coming off the work table. For those of you who aren't familiar with how buying a sample works here's the lowdown. Most of the dresses you see here are photographic samples made up for photo shoots and trying on. A few are in fabrics close to but not as ready for prime time as the imported silks custom ordered by clients. Just so you know, a few of them are indeed in yummy 100 percent silks but a couple seasons old, hence the lower price. In any case your sample will be one-of-a-kind and handmade, have couture technique likes hand-picked zipper and hand-tacked linings no machine can emulate. Before I sell these babies rest assured they do go through proper refurbishing and cleaning.

BRIGiTTE AND MIGUEL'S MUIR BEACH WEDDING
Wednesday, January 23, 2013 7:56:12 PM America/Los_Angeles

Near and dear to my own heart is a place close by called Muir Beach here in Marin County, California with beauty beyond anything imaginable. Brigitte and Miguel are avid campers. In their search for a venue, they wanted something that had a very personal connection with their personality. And so they came upon Slide Ranch. The landscape was rich and beautiful, overlooking the Pacific Ocean at their ceremony site and reception area. They and their guests even set up camp between the Ceremony and Reception as the evening would turn into a post-wedding camping excursion. The details and design were kept modest and simple as they wanted to rely primarily on their surroundings to set the scene. DIY sign posts made were from broken down wood pallets, scrap wood and leftover paint; the flower arrangements were created by the Bride with Flowers purchased from Etsy; the table centerpieces were craft projects with purchased and collected items; wine barrels were purchased off of Craigslist, refinished and used as poles for light strings. After the reception dinner, the party moved into a Yurt which hung off the side of a cliff over looking the California coastline. The sun burst in just as they began their first dance, creating the perfect light and atmosphere to kick off the dancing.

THE PARASOL
Tuesday, January 22, 2013 6:15:13 PM America/Los_Angeles

Did you know even before Marie Antoinette, the parasol was considered a necessity in every woman's wardrobe to ward off the sun. By the mid-1800s when they hit their zenith in the Western World, it was at least known then sun prematurely ages skin. A century later we have scientific proof exposure not only ages but can cause melanoma. So our grandmothers had the right idea flaunting beautiful accessories (before sunscreen). And so evolved the parasol; at it's most chic it can be an art form full of intricate treatments and applications just like hats, veils, purses and shoes

TWO BRIDES: AIMEE AND HOLLY
Thursday, January 10, 2013 6:57:03 PM America/Los_Angeles

At first photographer, Sandi Rufo was both excited and nervous she wouldn't or couldn't find creative ways to photograph two brides. Holly and Aimee however were so much in love that it just came naturally. All she had to do was photograph them being themselves and the results were amazing! Said Sandi, "If I could say one thing about Holly and Aimee it would be that they did it their way and didn't follow any rules. They both wore beautiful vintage dresses with the most adorable red and scarlet Maryjane shoes. They had a candle light ceremony which was fantastic and then partied, and I mean partied straight through the night."
Holly and Aimee attended high school together but didn't really get to know each other until years later. They both had just gotten out of relationships and would talk to each other about the type of person they would really like to be with and realized that they were describing each other. Once they started dating, they just knew it was meant to be. "It was clear to me that they are truly soul mates and I am so happy to have been a part of their awesome wedding! Congrats Holly and Aimee!"

L'ORANGE
Wednesday, January 9, 2013 6:24:25 PM America/Los_Angeles

Shades of orange usually convey autumn and late summer palettes. Not always though. Think about it. A clear and unmuted citrus orange is one of the first colors we think of when we zone in on what blooms come spring in the orchards alongside wildflowers. Orange is vibrant and dramatic and in almost any shade from pale peach to a deep and clear citrus is one of those colors we can almost taste . . . .
THE NEW GUY CHIC
Tuesday, January 8, 2013 6:55:31 PM America/Los_Angeles

Most mornings you pop in here and we're all about the wedding from the bride's perspective. Today is about the guys. Frankly I'm jazzed these days when I see less restriction in men's wedding wear and more comfort as well as character added into the mix.. I'd say too the guys do a pretty good job of showing up and looking like beauts considering they don't spend hours shopping in hoards with their groomsmen. Nor do they ponder days before saying 'Yes' to the tux (or ensemble) and wait months for their wedding outfit to be delivered. In fact, most modern gents are shopping alongside their fiance, getting into the whole palette of colors and sharing in the overall wedding experience. Below you'll find a few of my favorite grooms sporting their own kind of chic from various shoots . . . .

MOM CHIC
Friday, January 4, 2013 6:15:18 PM America/Los_Angeles

Only recently has wedding wear for moms achieved any semblence of chic. I remember a time (80s-90s) when they couldn't find a damn thing out there that didn't make them look like an old matron from a forties flick. Fast forward 2013. Come on now, judging by these images these model/moms look more like your beautiful big sis than even the hippest, fiercest momster. But I do enjoy these picks from Brides UK offering up capsule collections just for mom. Any one of these ensembles could be reworn to an art opening or gala. Another thought here: Brides who don't like the "all dressed in white" factor might consider some of these looks. I mean, do you really have to be an older bride to dress mature . . . . .? What are your thoughts on this?

Thursday, December 13, 2012 6:50:17 PM America/Los_Angeles

This wedding dress through my inbox, I am particularly interested in the story behind. Emily married Paul in her late mother's wedding dress, a stunning and classic A-line including Venetian lace corset. This is one of my favorite photographer duo Dan and Melissa from Michigan, another wedding. Their wedding on the background of the bays and lakes always so picturesque. Melissa said: "In six days in the rain, a doctor, married Paul and Emily shoot weddings there are two, this day is the perfect display (first appearance) between the bride and her father, because she was wearing her late mother of the bride at the wedding reception and the future bride and groom are two very special and emotional moment later turned into a gorgeous wedding dress short, so she can dance the night away ice cream St. generation of ice cream dessert selection and very fit their own style. A LACE AND ROSE WEDDING
Tuesday, December 11, 2012 7:13:32 PM America/Los_Angeles

Here's a styled shoot from Down Under so incredibly gorgeous in details, I could feast on images like this every day of the year. Check out the crocheted laces and roses in blush pinks and soft yellows. And of course there's the country backdrop. The photography was done by Kristy Mason of Figtree Pictures. Said Kristy about photographing this styled shoot: "This shoot was so incredibly fun. I started dreaming of how I would do my wedding again if I could... and if I could... it would be just like this : We headed down to Byron Bay on a gloriously sunny Autumn day. Peachy Vintage styled the day and prepared all of the gorgeous florals, including the bride's headpiece and bouquet. Casey's ideas and themes were brilliant! Jennifer Gifford supplied not one but two... that's right... two amazingly beautiful dresses. Paper Dolls crafted the wonderful stationery and table settings and seating plans, perfectly matched with the theme of the day. Leah from Wedding Hair by Leah was our incredible hair and makeup stylist. The deliciously decadent cake was shipped in (OK, not literally shipped in!) by from Charlotte at Let Them Eat Cake. The wonderful models were Levi and Dayna....how stunning are they!? ...and of course the superb location was 'Fig Tree Restaurant' in Byron Bay.

REAL WEDDING: LAURA AND KEVIN
Sunday, December 9, 2012 6:12:13 PM America/Los_Angeles

I think you'll be as impressed as I was with the many details of Laura and Kevin's rainy day wedding. From the bright yellow flowers to the vintage Caddy that lent such a retro feel to the event, the setting was on the water in Northern Michigan with incredible views of lake and fall colors. A detail I particularly love were pillows and blankets set by a fireplace to keep guests warm. The blankets were handmade by Kevin's grand-mom and pillows done up by Laura's mom and friend. Shot by the talented duo of Dan and Melissa Wedding Photographers, here's what Melissa had to say: "Laura and Kevin were an amazing couple. We had a great time sharing in this special day with them. Laura knows what she wants and makes it happen. It was a cold, windy and rainy day but that didn't stop this outdoor wedding from being perfect. All the guests got good use out of their umbrellas waiting for the bride to walk down the aisle. And just as she did the sun peaked from behind the clouds adding the perfect touch to this beautiful wedding. They were all smiles as they said their vows beneath a shared umbrella, light sprinkles and gorgeous sun rays streaking between partly cloudy skies. Let's not forget about Papa and his vintage 1940s Cadillac which caught the eyes of many guests and passersby. Of course nothing was a stunning to look at then the blushing bride.

Tuesday, November 27, 2012 5:36:18 PM America/Los_Angeles

Baby it's cold outside! Not a prob: A winter bride has that magical wonderland backdrop of white and silver light to inspire her. I really swooned over these bling and feather ice princess images infusing so much glimmer. Something to remember about wearing white in winter--opticals and brights are perfect and pair up beautifully with silver grays. REAL WEDDING: WHITNEY AND MICAH
Monday, November 26, 2012 7:21:47 PM America/Los_Angeles

You have to admit, part of the beauty of this wedding was the setting, the picturesque Warwick Country Club on Narragansett Bay. And just look at these two--so in love! Whitney and Micah tied the knot in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, she arriving with her father in a black Classic Ford Super 8. Erin Camp Photography was on hand at Our Lady of Mercy Parish to shoot the ceremony. Afterwards guests traveled in true Rhode Island style, in an authentic Newport Trolley, the newlyweds meeting up with family and friends to celebrate at Warwick County Country Club. I personally love the picture of Whitney on the spacious lawn, gown sprawled out with babes in each arm. As Erin who shot the day said, "This was the wedding little girls dream of . . ."

and how it could be developed 'à la française'
"We created a vintage romantic theme evoking an elegant, poetic and almost magical atmosphere in a lovely French park (with a Gustave Eiffel glass house and a XVIII century castle).
We chose to develop three themes and styles to present the many possibilities of the genre :
First, in white, black and purple : Thoughts of love – the romantic promenade of a blushing bride-to-be thinking of her fiancé…
Then, in white and black : Fairytale – a curious fairytale princess lost in the contemplation of the beautiful garden …
Finally, in ivory, gold and brown : Imaginary travels – an elegant Victorian lady living imaginary adventures, ready for the more romantic of them all : Marriage…"

Nostalgic Los Angeles Wedding
Sunday, November 18, 2012 7:03:53 PM America/Los_Angeles
This little wedding sent over by Sarah of Hazelwood Photo makes our hearts sing with vintage joy — seriously, does it get any more stunning than this incredible bride? The bride and groom both collect vinyl records, so they not only used a DJ who spun vinyl but also used old records for their seating charts! There’s so much packed into these stunning California nuptials and some great advice from bride Victoria, so hop to it!

From the bride, Victoria: We never really came up with a solid theme to follow. Kieron just kept on saying “Don’t think about themes, think about aesthetics!” We basically tried to incorporate some of our favorite things so pretty much every detail in the wedding directly reflects something about us. The color scheme is just colors we like (ivory, gold, emeralds and metallics); the vintage dress (the first and only dress I tried on — it immediately felt right) because I love vintage clothes and most of my wardrobe is vintage; the venue is the house where I grew up and my favorite place in the world; we incorporated vinyl records because we both collect records; we used succulents because I love them and I make cactus dishes for a hobby (I made all the mini-terrarium favors with my awesome bridesmaid Aubrey); the mariachi band to pay homage to my Mexican heritage and a classic photochemical photobooth because we’ve always taken photobooth pictures since we first started dating (see our save-the-dates made with photobooth strips over the years). I could go on but I guess I’m just saying that instead of going for some kind of theme, we just allowed the stuff that we love to become the direct inspiration for how we wanted our wedding to feel. Overall, I think one of the most important details for me was to have family be a big part. That’s why we had displayed the photos of weddings in our families throughout the generations and we felt so blessed to be able to have Kieron’s grandfather officiate the ceremony (he’s been married for 65 years so that really is an inspiration).

Most memorable moment of the day? I would say it was when I was approaching Kieron for our first look. Of course Kieron had his back turned to me as I was walking towards him but I could tell that he was just as nervous and breathless as I was. It felt like everything that we had worked so hard on — all the planning, shopping, crafting and stressing — had lead up to this very moment. The shoot was next door so it was just Kieron and me (plus our wonderful photographer) and for the first time ever, that’s when I really FELT like his bride. Kieron turned around to see me and the expression was priceless. It was like nothing else in the world mattered and finally, we could just soak it up and enjoy each othe

Any advice you want to share with future brides-to-be? Be as involved as you possibly can in the planning process of your wedding. A few people told me how proud we should be of our wedding and that it had a really personal touch. We really do feel proud of our wedding day because we put so much of ourselves into it. Every detail deserves your special attention and every decision should be a thoughtful one. When in doubt, trust your instincts and follow your heart. Though it may be tough to see the forest for the trees in the planning stages, when it all comes together on your special day it will be well worth it!

THE BOUFFANT ROSE
Thursday, November 15, 2012 6:28:10 PM America/Los_Angeles

O! how much more doth beauty beauteous seem
By that sweet ornament which truth doth give.
The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem
For that sweet odour, which doth in it live.
The canker blooms have full as deep a dye
As the perfumed tincture of the roses,
Hang on such thorns, and play as wantonly
When summer's breath their masked buds discloses:
But, for their virtue only is their show,
They live unwoo'd, and unrespected fade;
Die to themselves. Sweet roses do not so;
Of their sweet deaths are sweetest odours made:
And so of you, beauteous and lovely youth,
When that shall vade, my verse distills your truth.

Bridal Stylist – Collars & Diamonds
Wednesday, November 14, 2012 6:06:22 PM America/Los_Angeles

When Lanie sent me the above images of these Louis Vuitton Diamond Collars, I was in absolute awe. They’re dripping in elegance but also chicness as they kind of resemble jeweled collars–a trend that shows no signs of fading away. Since strapless dresses seem to be the go-to silhouette with bridal gowns, what better way to add some bling to your ensemble than with these diamond collars? Now of course, I don’t imagine you have a couple thousand dollars lying around waiting to be spent on a a Louis Vuitton diamond collar but hey, a girl can dream, no? And just in case you’re wanting to make those dreams a reality, I’ve rounded up some similar options that won’t break the bank. Your welcome!

Okay, yeah. This Isacc Mizrahi piece might break the bank too at $2,500 but it was too good to not post!

THE HIGH TEA WEDDING
Tuesday, November 13, 2012 9:58:54 PM America/Los_Angeles
Imagine picture hats paired up with short white gloves. Add lace doilies under floral tea cups, sliver tea pots with peonies mixed in with blush roses. Lay out all the fine china and here comes the bride donning a vintage lace tea gown circa 1920. These are some of the one-off details that make up a high tea wedding. Teatime is my number one theme for the reason it incorporates some of the most lady-like elements of entertaining, fashion and decor. This polished and sophisticated late afternoon mini-meal over the centuries has become the perfect showcase for delectable little sandwiches and scrumptious petits fours framed by white lace doilies Once upon a time high tea was celebrated by really enjoying those afternoon hours before sunset, the perfect time for a wedding celebration. While high tea suggests all the formality of a big wedding it's also perfect for the informal celebration. You can keep it simple and at the same time elegant serving finger sandwiches, small pastries, tea and champagne buffet style. Whether you're planning a large or small wedding I hope these images are an inspiration point for you . . . .

Tip: If you search thrift shops and flea markets, you'll find every kind of tea cup and pot you can imagine. Go ahead and mix up patterns. These days you can lay out a whole potpourri of diverse designs.
Tip: Use 9-12-inch wide cuts of lace as runners to decorate a table before you lay down china and food laden platters ....

RUSTIC CHIC PART 1
Sunday, November 11, 2012 5:57:16 PM America/Los_Angeles

If you caught Rustic Chic Part 1 last week I know you're waiting for the second installment where I promised you a good dose of color and of course gobs of inspiration. Here it all is so beautifully photographed by Elena Tihonovs of Fairy Daily in France. Originally this post ran on the French Wedding Blog, "La mariée en Colère, I particularly love how they've worked out the styling here--denim jackets over frothy tulle and lace skirts paired up with one-of-a-kind floral mixes in the bouquets. Next up the desert and candy bar has a country charm with all the elegance of a display of fine pastries and drink. If I could do it all over again, I think this editorial would certainly be one of my inspiration points....

Chicago Loft Wedding
Thursday, November 8, 2012 6:23:20 PM America/Los_Angeles
Newlyweds Kathleen and Brian wanted their wedding to be a mix of a little bit tradition with a heap of modernity, so what did they do? They exchanged wedding vows in a grand basilica and housed their wedding reception in an urban loft space, of course! iLuvPhoto was there to capture the day’s events, including an incredibly fresh pink, orange, and green pops that we’re positively crazy about.

From the bride, Kathleen: I called our wedding style modern romance. Just like everyone says, we wanted our wedding to be like us. So we took a modern approach that’s rooted in tradition by getting married in a basilica and then having our reception in a loft space. We loved the idea of pairing our minimalistic, clean-lined, venue with lots of hot colors, warm lighting and romantic texture.

I would describe the look of our wedding as black, white, and bright. Our theme was modern romance and our color scheme was fuchsia, orange, and silver with tones of hot pinks, purples, corals, and red. We had lots of fun DIY projects with our favorite being printing and framing pictures of our engagement session with our dogs and cat to display at the reception. Other DIY projects including printing and assembling favor donation card to PAWS Chicago, and our invitations.

I had no idea how crafty my fiancé was until I saw how much better he was a cutting and pasting silver paper ribbons to hold our invitation reception, and response cards together! We also did all designing and printing at home for menus, favor donation card to PAWS Chicago, table cards and escort cards. I also painted a box with silver glitter for our guests to insert advice to the bride and groom cards, as our guest book.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? I wish I had invested in a Day of Coordinator or even splurged on a Wedding Planner for those details that didn’t really interest me. Follow those timelines that are you see everywhere. Delegate, assign, and follow-up with all those people that offer help. Have fun with it and don’t take it so seriously. It’s a very important day, but it is just one day.

Modern Mediterranean Wedding Ideas
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 6:18:11 PM America/Los_Angeles
When we heard Yoleine Dumarsais of Yellow Bird Events was putting together a shoot mixing a modern aesthetic with cool Mediterranean style, we jumped out of our seats a little. What’s more beautiful than rich water tones, gold accents, and the incredible setting of the chic London West Hollywood hotel? Helping to capture the gorgeousness was Fondly Forever Photography, who completely knocked it out of the park.

From the stylist, Yoleine: I’m a big fan of prints, bold colors, and GOLD! I was inspired by a brass mirror frame I saw at one of my many shopping trips to Anthropologie. Immediately the thought of pretty “Gold Rings” for a background began to come into plan. Knitting rings were used to put together the rings for the dessert backdrop, ceremony backdrop, and table numbers. They were spray painted antique gold to give them metal appeal and mirrors were placed behind a few of them.

I wanted to mix Mediterranean prints and raw textures with bold Blues to bring in a very romantic and unique feel to the table. I wanted to also keep a modern appeal to the mix so the rings played an important role throughout the set-up. The table linen was a very rich blue with ring patterns throughout. The table was paired with textured terracotta vessels. Instead of candle votives, amber glass was used in tiny piles with the candle votives lit from underneath. The table napkin rings and table number were hand-made from gold wiring to create a coiling effect. We couldn’t be happier with the turnout! Every vendor really had their hand and talents shown through this shoot!

Minnesota Flower Farm Wedding
Tuesday, November 6, 2012 6:19:22 PM America/Los_Angeles
Not only is this wedding from Jeff Loves Jessica Photography itself completely gorgeous, but the story of Lara and Steve is even sweeter! After living together in Phuket, Thailand, the couple knew they wanted to infuse their wedding day with subtle homages to their time there. And, well, when you’re married in a flower farm, how could your wedding day be anything other than stunning?

From the bride, Lara: One of the first things we did when we got engaged was to sit down and write out a list of words or phrases that we wanted to describe the feel of our wedding. I still remember sitting out on our patio on a warm summer day and coming up with things like “family style,” “city meets country,” and “a big ole party where, hey! we’re also getting married!” Ultimately we would also use words like simple, classic and most importantly “us.” We also realized how much our friends and family meant to us while being away from them, so we wanted our wedding to not only celebrate our love, but to honor and celebrate everyone around us who have helped us become who we are.

We hoped (and in retrospect feel like we successfully achieved) that our wedding would look and feel “organic.” Although we do love our co-ops, what we really meant by that was that we wanted everything about our wedding day to organically unfold and feel relaxed and natural. Fortunately, that vision was also conducive to our attempt to be budget-friendly. We didn’t really have a theme or color scheme although everyone from our florist to our mothers tried to narrow one down for us based on what we were telling them. But, because of everyone’s efforts, not a theme or color scheme, it ended up being a beautiful day! For example, we wanted our flowers to be local and seasonal (as we are proud Minnesotans!) with a hint of the tropics (as homage to Steve’s lineage and our time in Phuket).

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? After becoming overwhelmed by options and details and yes, even wedding magazines and blogs, a recently married friend wisely advised me to choose 2 or 3 special touches to take on. We ultimately had to scale back a lot of the details I thought we needed because it was simply too much to coordinate from abroad, but we both walked away with our sanity and the few details we chose to keep were really enough to make it feel like us. So, that is advice I would pass on to any bride, even if you aren’t trying to plan a wedding from halfway around the world!

Also, we didn’t have a wedding planner, but I now understand why people do! If it’s an expense you have the budget for, go for it, but if you don’t, have someone in charge on the day of other than you or the groom! My friend Caitlin was my right-hand girl and she knew me and my vision enough so that anyone with last minute questions or crises could go to her and I was blissfully oblivious to any last minute drama!

Which leads to me my final bit of advice: no matter what happens, remember that at the end of the day you will be married! A light sprinkle started about an hour before our beautiful outdoor ceremony was to begin and Caitlin and I waited until 10 minutes before the start of the ceremony to decide to move it under the reception tent. Even though I had always envisioned our ceremony out in the middle of the beautiful garden, in that moment it was a no-brainer (and it helped that the tent was gorgeously decorated with twinkling lights and vines anyway!). And you know what, in retrospect, we think it worked out better than we had planned! Everyone sitting around their tables surrounding us felt so much more intimate than them sitting in rows with our backs to them! This was a good final lesson in letting go of the small stuff and truly having the day organically unfold itself!

British Columbia Beach Wedding
Monday, November 5, 2012 7:09:03 PM America/Los_Angeles
This Canadian wedding from Erin Wallis Photography is full of the creamiest pastels, frilly wedding cakes, and beach-y beauty beyond our wildest imaginations. Everything about this wedding is right out of our wedding dreams, from the bridesmaids dressed in white to the waterside ceremony.

From the bride, Steph: We met through a mutual friend but had our first kiss on the Lucky Bar dance floor in Victoria. We are both super into music, so when we lived in Victoria we went to Lucky Bar almost every Saturday. We always try to go to Lucky Bar when we are back in town with all of our friends and had our going away party there when we moved to SF.

We chose Tofino because its our favorite place to get away on the west coast. We go there a few times a year to surf, spa and get away from the city. We have been going there since we met and both really love it there. I think we both knew we would always get married there and wanted to share its beauty with our friends and family.

The wedding palette was really inspired by my dress. I found it online right when we got engaged and the blush color and simplicity of it really inspired the entire wedding theme.
We wanted the environment to feel rustic and truly west coast, so we used elements like wood risers, natural textures, wild flowers, and had lavender scented candles that made the whole room smell amazing.
Our reception venue had huge vaulted ceilings, so to make it feel more intimate we strung globe lights throughout the whole hall. The guys got really creative with this, as we weren’t allowed to string anything from the roof. It turned out amazing and created a romantic feeling of being outdoors.

My favorite part of the day was standing at the top of the stairs overlooking the beach with my dad right before we walked down the aisle. It was a really calm moment where I could overlook the whole ceremony and see everyone I love gathered on the beach to celebrate with us. I thought I would be nervous, but when Bon Iver’s “Holocene” came on, and we started to walk down the aisle, everyone else faded away and I was filled with excitement and happiness that I was about to marry the man of my dreams in the most beautiful place in the world.

From Erin Wallis Photography: She’s a little shy, super sweet and oozes stylish awesomeness. He’s sincere, genuine and makes you want to know more. When I arrived and laid eyes on Steph’s blush colored Ivy and Aster dress, and the bridesmaids white dresses, I almost jumped out of my skin with excitement. Everything was dreamy. They were married at a low tide on Tofino’s picturesque South Chesterman beach. Living in San Francisco they would venture to Tofino as often as possible, to surf, spa and relax. They both knew they would always get married there as they wanted to share its beauty with friends and family. Exactly as imagined they were surrounded with the adoring eyes of their cherished family and friends. They wound up with the most magical wedding weather combination in history. Sunshine and fog. Perfectly West Coast. Perfectly dreamy and so well suited to their sweet, whimsical wedding. It was a wedding that brilliantly displayed that with your wedding, anything is possible.
Tofino, BC comes with a distinct air of magic, and coupled with the intense love of a stunning couple… amazing florals, the thoughtful and whimsical colours, raw oyster bar, photo booth and a seriously fun wedding party… it was a combination that dreams are truly made of. Everything was executed flawlessly even the details out of their control, the fog rolling in around their ceremony, the sunlight peeking through at them at all the right moments and the surfers riding the waves in the background. A breathtaking reflection of such a laid back, meaningful and romantic celebration of a truly unique and lovely couple.

Get ready to see two of the prettiest brides you ever did see, thanks to these images from Sweet Little Photographs. Brides Alanna and Felicity married in a backyard ceremony where their bridal party consisted of a “Brother of Honor” and “Sister of Honor” in lieu of the traditional groomsmen and bridesmaids. If you’re planning a wedding now, be sure to read the brides’ advice for maintaining your calm!

From bride Alanna: We envisioned a wedding weekend that would be classic, romantic, emotional, personal, and intimate. We began with the concept of an intimate ceremony, and family-style dinner at Felicity’s mom’s home, and went from there. The rest of the pieces for our vision just seemed to fall in to place. We had both our ceremony and reception in Felicity’s mom’s backyard. This was probably the easiest decision for us other than the food. We met in college in Ohio, but have built a life together in San Diego. We both have family and friends in Ohio and knew they’d have to travel, but we feel like this is our home, and having it all at Kerry’s made it even more special.

We didn’t have a traditional wedding party. Felicity had her only brother Reilly stand with her as her “Brother of Honor” and Aislinn, “Sister of Honor,” stood with Alanna. Aislinn wore an adorable black cocktail dress from Mia Bella Couture in Del Mar. Reilly wore a classic tuxedo from A Better Deal Tuxedo in Bird Rock.

What are some adjectives that best describe the look of your wedding? Timeless, elegant, warm, and magical. We didn’t have a specific color scheme, but did want to keep it clean and minimal, letting the colors of the landscape, flowers, and the house shine through. We worked with shades of white and neutral, with a little blush here and there. We joked that our colors were “blush and bashful,” so anyone who has watched Steel Magnolias will appreciate that. Home weddings are DIY for months leading up to the wedding day. The most visible DIY projects were the cones that held rose petals for guests to toss, the table seating on the wall, and welcome bags for out-of–town guests. We really incorporated a lot of personal touches throughout. We attached scottie dogs to the handle of the cones as a tribute to our sorority mascot, where we met. The wands that everyone waved when we entered cocktail hour had jingle bells on them as a tribute to Felicity’s aunt that passed away who always gave her a jingle bell on Christmas. There were a lot of those little details that were really meaningful.

What did you serve for dessert? We opted for Tiramisu (from Piatti’s) in lieu of traditional wedding cake. Since we weren’t doing the traditional cutting of the cake, we had the dessert delivered with sparklers to each table. That was fun! We also had a dessert table with pizzelles, biscotti, and Italian wedding cookies that Felicity’s mom and family friends pitched in to make – they vanished in no time.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Stay organized, be proactive, ask for help, and stick with your original plan and idea that you have from the beginning. Time flies by much faster than you would think. Do things as early as possible to avoid stress later. Whatever is most important to you, write it down in the very beginning, that way later during the planning process once all of the chaos has begun and ideas have grown more grandiose you can look back at your original vision for your wedding and remember what was most important to you. For us, photos were important so we found AMAZING photographers and had that settled 10 months in advance. We are both control-freaks so it was hard to let go, but people want to help and be involved… let them. The time you spend with family planning a wedding is really special, and keep in mind that it’s an important day for them, too. Once the wedding week begins, let it all go, and just enjoy it. Having all of your family and friends together to celebrate your love, it’s once in a lifetime.

Backyard Nashville Wedding
Wednesday, October 31, 2012 7:05:46 PM America/Los_Angeles
When Katy and Gavin thought about where to exchange their wedding vows, the place that stuck out the most to them was also the most personal: a Victorian home at which they’d spent a great deal of time already with friends and loved ones. Brandon Chesbro came along to capture the day’s festivities, including a backyard ceremony and an indoor feast! Our favorite detail of their wedding? The couple displayed postcards Gavin wrote to Katy over the course of their relationship for all to enjoy!

From the bride, Katy: [The style we envisioned for our wedding was] intimate, non-traditional, Southern-Victorian style set to a classical score. Lots of soft pastels, with an eclectic, casual, vintage feel.

Everything was DIY. This wedding was made possible by friends lending a creative helping hand. The bride and a bridesmaid did all the decorating. We made all the streamers and flower arrangements by hand. The artwork and decor were provided by our friends.

The groom lived in an old Victorian style house with his band mates. It was quite a memorable spot in Nashville where everyone hung out and where so much creativity had taken place. It seemed fitting to get married in the back yard.

Tall Timber Barn Wedding
Tuesday, October 30, 2012 7:24:28 PM America/Los_Angeles
Not only is Amanda one heck of a cute bride, she’s also part of the amazing team of photographers that make up Love Me Do Photography. Naturally, she had fellow photographers Nadine and Carina shoot her wedding day, and we’re tickled to be sharing it! John and Amanda had a Quaker style ceremony, with a reception on the sprawling grounds ofTall Timber Barn to follow, complete with a pig roast and an endless supply of craft beers.

From the bride, Amanda: John and I got married this past August 18th at Tall Timber Barn in the Poconos. We decided on a Poconos wedding immediately as that is where we got engaged and a favorite place to visit. The barn turned out to be perfect because John really wanted lots of different places for guests to hang out, there was the barn, two firepits and another smaller building with couches. Once we decided on the barn, everything else just fell into place. We always wanted a pig roast, and for Boris our bulldog to be involved in the wedding.

Remember when we pinned these shoes?

There were a few vendors I’ve worked with an loved, so that was easy, plus I have amazing talented friends. My good friend Whitney makes little animal head pins and we thought they went with the venue (lots of taxidermy) so we used those as boutonnieres. John’s whole family are serious canoe-ers, so we snagged one of their canoes to fill with canned craftbeer. Since we had a ton of canned beer, it only made sense to get custom beer koozies for favors. I started buying old Poconos postcards from the area/town we were in and used them for signage and the photobooth.

We started collecting artists mushrooms on hikes and used those for table numbers. Our friend Drew is a brewer at Flying Fish and he brewed us a special toasting beer. My good friend Ben makes the best bbq sauce, so he made a bottle for each table (label is a photo of Ben silhoutted with a poconos scene). His wife Katherine designed us a print that is on John, David, and Boris’s (our dog) ties. Most of the rest of the details I made, including the macarons, and flags. The ceremony was Quaker style with John’s sister officiating.

Vera Wang 2012 spring and fall collections
Monday, October 29, 2012 6:52:40 PM America/Los_Angeles
Vera Wang’s 2012 Spring collection is notable not only for the fact that the wedding dresses are beautiful (well there’s a surprise – ha!), but also because they’re colourful. Colour has been a flirtation in past Vera Wang collections, but this collection is a full blown affair. Beautiful, non?

The Vera Wang Fall 2012 Collection is a much moodier matter altogether – titled ‘Witchcraft’, there is not a white dress in sight.

As an ardent admirer of anything Vera Wang, I’m somewhat predictably enamoured, but can imagine it’s not to everyone’s taste. I do love the wintery feeling in the Fall collection which contrasts with the more cheery, lighter tones of the Spring collection.
Vera Wang is a heavily influential figure in the wedding industry so I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see brides venturing away from white and ivory.
So, would you wear a black wedding dress??

Peach and Black Wedding Ideas
Thursday, October 25, 2012 6:39:28 PM America/Los_Angeles
One of our favorite things about autumn is how it brings with it a proliferation of rich tones — deep greens, golds, blacks, and peaches, all of which are present in this styled shoot from Camden Chitwood of Emerson Events and Amanda Watson. If these colors alone aren’t enough to make you swoon, we guarantee the black and gold cake from Madison’s on Main will do the trick

From the event designer, Camden Chitwood of Emerson Events: I have been swooning over peach & gold recently. Juliet garden roses are a favorite flower of mine, so that was the first thing I knew was going to be used in this shoot. Since it’s Autumn… we just had to add a darker hue into the mix. I softened it up & created drama by using black lace for the chair caps & table overlay.

Since it’s close to Halloween, of course there had to be a masquerade mask. The theme ended up morphing into a Victorian romance feel. My baker Donna Munson had full creative range, with the only guidelines being black & gold – she definitely hit the nail on the head! Drama & more drama.

Shoot Location: Oklahoma City, OK / Event Design, Concept, and Floral: Emerson Events / Event Photographer:Amanda Watson / Wedding Dress: Moliere Bridal / Hair and Makeup: Madi Martin of Starlite Salon / Wedding Cake, Cupcakes, and Cookies: Madison’s on Main / Candy: 42nd Street Candy Company / Cake Table, Flatware, Dishes, Invitations: Paper Lion / Linens and Chair Rentals: Marianne’s Rentals / Model: Taylor Parker
Couples wedding shoot nude Cycling

Mark Tassoni (a remarkably talented photographer as it happens) was out on a wedding photography session with some newlyweds when an extraordinary thing happened – a bunch of nude cyclists appeared in the road behind them. And this photo is the result. The bride cracking up (so to speak), the impish look on the groom’s face – pure genius

PRINTS! Why not add a little funk to the details of your tablescape, and why not have a floral print wedding dress? These days, anything goes, and to put it plainly, we think that is LOVELY!

Love is the key to happiness
Monday, October 22, 2012 6:21:57 PM America/Los_Angeles
As we all know, love is the crux of a happy life.
Love helps us stay calm and serene even when things are tough.
It can carry us through the hard times.
Love looks for ways to be of service.
Love is enjoying the surprises of life,
and being totally delighted with what life gives you.
Love is the key to happiness
and it is a real blessing to others.
People who love make the world a kind and gentle place and other people feel safe around them.
They appreciate differences instead of making them a cause for prejudice or fighting.
Beautiful Smile and Love
Sunday, October 21, 2012 6:26:00 PM America/Los_Angeles
The poor are very wonderful people. One evening we went out and we picked up four people from the street. And one of them was in a most terrible condition, and I told the sisters: You take care of the other three. I take care of this one who looked worse. So I did for her all that my love can do. I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face. She took hold of my hand as she said just the words "thank you" and she died. I could not help but examine my conscience before her and I asked what would I say if I was in her place. And my answer was very simple. I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself. I would have said I am hungry, that I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more - she gave me her grateful love. And she died with a smile on her face. As did that man whom we picked up from the drain, half eaten with worms, and we brought him to the home. "I have lived like an animal in the street, but I am going to die like an angel, loved and cared for." And it was so wonderful to see the greatness of that man who could speak like that, who could die like that without blaming anybody, without cursing anybody, without comparing anything. Like an angel - this is the greatness of our people. And that is why we believe what Jesus had said: I was hungry, I was naked, I was homeless, I was unwanted, unloved, uncared for, and you did it to me.
I believe that we are not real social workers. We may be doing social work in the eyes of the people, but we are really contemplatives in the heart of the world. For we are touching the body of Christ twenty-four hours…And I think that in our family we don't need bombs and guns, to destroy, to bring peace, just get together, love one another, bring that peace, that joy, that strength of presence of each other in the home. And we will be able to overcome all the evil that is in the world.
And with this prize that I have received as a Prize of Peace, I am going to try to make the home for many people who have no home. Because I believe that love begins at home, and if we can create a home for the poor I think that more and more love will spread. And we will be able through this understanding love to bring peace be the good news to the poor. The poor in our own family first, in our country and in the world. To be able to do this, our Sisters, our lives have to be wove with prayer. They have to be woven with Christ to be able to understand, to be able to share. Because to be woven with Christ is to be able to understand, to be able to share. Because today there is so much suffering…When I pick up a person from the street, hungry, I give him a plate of rice, a piece of bread, I have satisfied. I have removed that hunger. But a person who is shut out, who feels unwanted, unloved, terrified, the person who has been thrown out from society - that poverty is so full of hurt and so unbearable…And so let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love, and once we begin to love each other naturally we want to do something.
Are men romantic?
Friday, October 19, 2012 6:27:57 PM America/Los_Angeles
We too often define "romantic" in women's terms - sending flowers and cards, saving mementos and putting them in a box or scrapbook, gushing over chick romance movies, or listening to romantic songs all day.
Men may not do these things, but many men do something more romantic than all that: they keep their love in their hearts forever.
My survey of 3000 men and women worldwide who tried reunions with lost loves asked, "How long did it take for you to get over your lost love?" Responses from the men indicated that they took significantly longer to get over their lost loves than the women. Some of the men were not satisfied with the survey choices: the last choice listed was, "Over 10 years." Only men crossed out all the choices and wrote, "I never got over her!" While no doubt some women never got over their lost loves, either, only men wrote this comment on the survey.
Adolescent boys are "not supposed" to cry over lost loves. But many of my male participants reported that, after their high school girlfriends broke up with them, they cried in private, every night, for months.
My lost love reunion findings about romantic men paralleled results of my survey of adults who never tried lost love reunions. There were significantly more men than women who chose to fill out the survey, and they expressed strong feelings for their first loves, even though they had not contacted these women (and may never do so).
Posts on the Message Board of my web site, Lostlovers.com, are more represented by women than men. But appearances are misleading. Actually, there are more men who are members of my site than women. The men don't post as often as the women, but they are reading!
Men more often sign up for private phone consultations to talk about their lost loves than women.
But it is a rare men's magazine that will print a story about love and romance. The editors tell me that they think men are uninterested. Not so! When my research was quoted in Playboy, it generated a lot of responses.
On occasions where romance is expected (such as Valentine's Day, birthdays or anniversaries), we should all remember to separate emotions from behaviors. Men may not make scrapbooks of mementos of their love experiences, but they are every bit as loving, loyal, and yes, romantic, as women - and sometimes more so!
Happiness will be contagious

What do women really want?
Tuesday, October 16, 2012 6:36:35 PM America/Los_Angeles

Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighboring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur's youthful happiness. So he offered him freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur, would have a year to figure out the answer. If, after a year, he still had no answer, he would be killed. The question was: What do women really want? Such a question would have perplexed even the most knowledgeable man, and, to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. Since it was better than death, however, he accepted the monarch's proposition to have an answer by year's end. He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everybody; the princess, the prostitutes, priests, the wise men, and the court jester. In all, he spoke with everyone but no one could give him a satisfactory answer. What most people did tell him was to consult the old witch, as only she would know the answer. The price would be high as the witch was famous for the exorbitant prices she charged. The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no alternative but to talk to the witch. She agreed to answer his question, but he'd have to accept her price; the old witch wanted to marry Gawain, the most noble of the Knights of the Round table and Arthur's closest friend! Young Arthur was horrified, she was hunchbacked and awfully hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like a sewer and often made obscene noises. He had never run across such a repugnant creature. He refused to force his friend to marry her and to have to endure such a burden. Gawain upon learning of the proposal, spoke with Arthur. He told him that nothing was too big a sacrifice compared to Arthur's life and the preservation of the Round table. Hence, their wedding was proclaimed, and the witch answered Arthur's question. What a woman really wants is to be able to be in charge of her own life. What a wedding Gawain and the witch had! Arthur was torn between relief and anguish. Gawain was proper as always, gentle and courteous. The old witch put her worst manners on display. She ate with her hands, belched and farted, and made everyone uncomfortable. The wedding night approached: Gawain, steeling himself for a horrific night, entered the bedroom. What a sight awaited! The most beautiful woman he'd ever seen lay before him! Gawain was astounded and asked what had happened. The beauty replied that since he had been so kind to her when she'd been a witch, half the time she would be her horrible, deformed self. And the other half, she would be her beautiful maiden self. Which would,he want her to be during the day and which during the night? What a cruel question! Gawain began to think of his predicament. What would you do? What Gawain chose follows below, but don't read until you've Noble Gawain replied that he would let her choose for herself. Upon hearing this, she announced that she would be beautiful all the time, because he had respected her and had let her be in charge of her own life. What is the moral of the story? The moral is that it doesn't matter if a woman is pretty or ugly, smart or dumb. Underneath it all, she's still a . . . . . witch!!! |

About love those Proverbs
Monday, October 15, 2012 6:42:26 PM America/Los_Angeles
Where there is great love, there are always miracles。
Love is like a butterfly. It goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes
If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden
Within you I lose myself, without you I find myself wanting to be lost again。
At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet。
Look into my eyes - you will see what you mean to me。
Distance makes the hearts grow fonder
I need him like I need the air to breathe。
If equal affection cannot be, let the more loving be me。
Love is a vine that grows into our hearts
If I know what love is, it is because of you。
Love is the greatest refreshment in life
Love never dies。
The darkness is no darkness with thee。
We cease loving ourselves if no one loves us。
There is no remedy for love but to love more
When love is not madness, it is not love
A heart that loves is always young
Love is blind
Love is like the moon, when it does not increase, it decreases
The soul cannot live without love
Brief is life, but love is long
Who travels for love finds a thousand miles not longer than oneLove keeps the cold out better than a cloak。
Take away love, and our earth is a tomb
My heart is with you
I miss you so much already and I haven't even left yet!
I'll think of you every step of the way
Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you
Passionate love is a quenchless thirst
The most precious possession that ever comes to a man in this world is a woman's heart
One word frees us of all the weight and pain in life. That word is love.
Every day without you is like a book without pages。
Love is hard to get into, but harder to get out of

We lived on the banks of the Tennessee River, and we owned the summers when we were girls. We ran wild through humid summer days that never ended but only melted one into the other. We floated down rivers of weekdays with no school, no rules , no parents, and no constructs other than our fantasies. We were good girls, my sister and I. We had nothing to rebel against. This was just life as we knew it, and we knew the summers to be long and to be ours.

The road that ran past our house was a one-lane rural route. Every morning, after our parents had gone to work, I' d wait for the mail lady to pull up to our box. Some days I would put enough change for a few stamps into a mason jarlid and leave it in the mailbox. I hated bothering mail lady with this transaction, which made her job take longer. But I liked that she knew that someone in our house sent letters into the outside world.

We planned our weddings with the help of Barbie dolls and the tiny purple wildfl owers growing in our side yard. We became scientists and tested concoctions of milk, orange juice, and mouthwash. We ate handfuls of bittersweet chocolate chips and licked peanut butter off spoons. When we ran out of sweets to eat, we snitched sugary Flintstones vitamins out of the medicine cabinet. We became masters of the Kraft macaroni and cheese lunch, and we dutifully called our mother at work three times a day to give her updates on our adventures. But don't call too often or speak too loudly or whine too much, we told ourselves, or else they'll get an noyed and she'll get fired and the summers will end.
We shaped our days the way we chose, far from the prying eyes of adults. We found our dad's Playboys and charged the neighborhood boys money to look at them. We made crank calls around the county, telling people they had won a new car. "What kind?" they' d ask. "Red," we' d always say. We put on our mom's old prom dresses, complete with gloves and hats, and sang backup to the C.W. McCall song convoy, " which we' d found on our dad's turntable.

UK: disposable water soluble wedding, fashion and environmental protection
Friday, October 12, 2012 8:31:15 PM America/Los_Angeles
The age old dilemma about what brides should do with their wedding dress once their honeymoon is over appears to have been solved by scientists。
British researchers have developed an environmentally friendly garment that can simply be dissolved in water after being worn。
Fashion and engineering students at Sheffield Hallam University developed the wedding dress, which can be transformed into five new fashion pieces。
The dress has polyvinyl alcohol, a biodegradable substance that is used in laundry bags and washing detergents, knitted into the fabric. This enables it to be dissolved into water without harming the environment。
Their creation is to be featured in an forthcoming exhibition, titled, a sustainable marriage, which will be shown at the university later this month。
But the payoff for the bride wearing this dress would be that they would need to wear an umbrella to their nuptials if rain was likely to spoil their big day. The design might not be to everyone’s fancy either。
"The students wanted to challenge the notion that a wedding dress should only be used once and aimed to explore modern society's attitudes towards throwaway fashion,” said Jane Blohm, a fashion lecturer。
“The project is a union between art and technology which explores the possibilities of using alternative materials for our clothing。
“The wedding gown is perhaps one of the most symbolic garments in (a woman's) wardrobe and represents the challenges of ‘throwaway fashion’."
She added: “In order to reduce fashion's impact on the environment, the fashion industry must begin to challenge conventional attitudes and practices。”
A survey in 2008 found the average cost of a wedding was now more than £20,000, compared with £14,643 five years ago。
The average price of a wedding dress alone was £997.
Romance With Chinese Characteristics
Thursday, October 11, 2012 6:41:09 PM America/Los_Angeles

BEIJING — Dating is hard at the best of times. In China the stakes are high from the outset: the expectation is that it should lead to marriage; never mind love for love’s sake.
A friend recently went on a blind date in Beijing. Arriving at the coffee shop, he found not only the girl but her mother, too. Within minutes she bombarded him with questions: What does he earn? Where did he study? Does he own a house?
Romance in China is often sacrificed to practicality; dating has largely become a commercial transaction. In Beijing parents gather in parks to introduce their children to one another. Singles’ clubs set people up according to requirements — height, income, property. And tens of thousands descend on matchmaking events in cities like Shanghai looking for the perfect mate.
For Chinese men today, being the perfect mate means having a car, an apartment, a good salary and, preferably, a tall stature. Women, meanwhile, must be married by 27; after that they are branded sheng nu or “leftover women.” (This derogatory term — whose prefix “sheng” is the same word used in “leftover food” — was listed as a new word in 2007 by the Chinese Ministry of Education).
“Marriage in many ways in China is a way of pulling resources,” says Roseann Lake, a Beijing-based journalist researching a book on sheng nu. In one direction, at least. “The idea that a woman, no matter how successful she is professionally, is absolutely nothing until she is married — it still comes down to that.”

Arranged marriages were banned in 1950. However, matchmaking — through work units and family — was, and still is, commonplace. Yes, China has experienced miraculous growth in the past three decades, but traditions are hard to shake. And Confucian ethics stress that marriage must satisfy societal duty over individual desire.
The one-child policy has further reinforced these expectations. With no welfare system in China, the young are expected to provide for the old: whom you marry matters for your entire family.
These concerns aren’t evenly shared, and they expose something of a generation gap. Children of the 1980s and 1990s — who were born in better economic times and fed on pop music and movies — are in less of a hurry to get married than their parents were.
The best-selling author Wang Hailing, who wrote “Divorce with Chinese Characteristics,” relays stories of pushy mothers on her micro-blog. One told her daughter to attend blind dates while she’s still at a “valuable” age.
Xie Yujie, a 26-year-old resident of Wenzhou, a city of more than nine million some 230 miles south of Shanghai, is unmarried. Despite a promising career as a nurse, her parents remind her daily of her filial duties to find a husband. Xie is looking for love, but her parents chastise her for not being more practical. “Money worship and materialism is the reality,” she explained last week.

And so now some single women in Chengdu, in southwest China, pay more than $3,100 for a special training course in how to snag a millionaire husband. In the reality TV dating program “If You Are The One,” a 22-year-old model infamously claimed, “I’d rather cry in a BMW than laugh on the back seat of a bicycle.”
These are extremes, of course, but the pressures are real. Although China’s skewed birth rate means there will be a surplus of about 24 million men in China by 2020, the majority of these bachelors will live in rural areas. In major cities — where the rate of housing costs to income can reach 12:1 — finding a good match is a constant worry for educated, ambitious women.
As Chinese Valentine’s Day — this Thursday, Aug. 23 — nears, preparations for dozens of matchmaking events, most aimed at marriage, are picking up. At the Huanleyuan Culture Club, a singles’ club in Beijing — basic requirement: a college degree; annual membership fee: about $560 — hundreds will be attending a gala matchmaking event. Ten thousand people are expected at a mass blind date in Guangyuan city, in Sichuan Province.
They’ll be looking not just for a fetching smile or that spark of chemistry, but also for the promise of money and connections.
